Pathlab has been providing laboratory services to the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions for more than 40 years and Lakes for approximately 15 years.  We provide medical laboratory testing to midwives, smear takers, rest homes and doctors. We also provide testing services for the Tauranga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Taupo, Grace, Braemar, Southern Cross and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals.

What to expect of the recruitment process:

Once you have applied for a specific advertised role you may be contacted to clarify details of your application, qualifications or previous experience. An initial phone interview may be conducted, especially if you are not living in the same location as the vacant position. Should you be shortlisted for a position with us, you will be notified of the interview time by telephone. Our interviews are generally conducted by a panel of up to three people. At your interview you may be required to provide proof of your right to work within New Zealand and copies of applicable qualifications. Should you be offered a position with us this will be subject to the completion of satisfactory references and staff health clearance. In accordance with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 all Collection Services staff are also now required to consent to a Police Check pre-employment and biannually thereafter.

Pre-Analytical Technicians (Phlebotomists )

Our pre-analytical technicians are the customer interface of our organisation, working closely with patients in our community and hospital based collection rooms, and performing home visits where applicable.

If you are interested in a career as a pre-analytical technician with Pathlab, you will ideally have a medical background with venepuncture experience or be a qualified Phlebotomist, however, if this doesn’t apply to you please don't be disheartened, as full training is available for all of our trainee technicians.

Our technicians are required to hold, or be working towards, a qualification in Phlebotomy; historically this was known as the Qualified Phlebotomy Technician (QPT) examination and is now the Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician (PAT) examination in Phlebotomy, provided through the

New Zealand Institute of Medical laboratory Science Inc

Pre-analytical technicians are required to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, they are dealing with our patients on a day to day basis and it is important to the organisation that a quality customer service be provided. A positive attitude, flexibility and reliability also go a long way!


Medical Laboratory Assistant

Medical Laboratory Assistants in our Specimen Services departments are responsible for preparing, labelling and registering specimens prior to their dispatch to the appropriate department for laboratory analysis.

If you are interested in a Medical Laboratory Assistant career with us, previous medical laboratory experience is not a prerequisite, but would be an advantage. You will need excellent computer and customer service skills, an eye for detail and high data entry accuracy rates.

The appropriate qualification for a Medical Laboratory Assistant is the Qualified Specimen Services Technician (QSST), through the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science Inc A number of our staff work towards and sit this examination during their employment with

Pathlab, in order to recognise the valuable experience they gain within our medical testing laboratories.  


Medical Laboratory Technician 

Working as a Medical Laboratory Technician can be very rewarding, and is a great career path, especially if you have a special interest in science and technology. Our Medical Laboratory Technicians support our Scientists and Pathologists, who are leaders in their fields. You will be collecting and testing specimens in one of our laboratories in the following disciplines: Transfusion Science, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Histology and Cytology.

Our Trainee Technicians are required to have a practical interest in science, high school science qualifications or have a minimum of one year of medical laboratory experience. Medical Laboratory Technicians must hold an applicable qualification, and hold registration with the

Medical Sciences Council of NZ

Shift and weekend work is usually required in these positions and you will need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.


Medical Laboratory Scientist

To work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in our pathology laboratories you must hold relevant tertiary qualifications in your chosen discipline and must be registered with the

Medical Sciences Council of NZ.  All of our Scientists are members of the NZIMLS CPD programme, which provides a path toward CPD certification using a points system linked to laboratory competencies and continuing education.
